Observatory Hill is located at the end of the Mall of Darjeeling, known as the Queen of the Hills. It is well-known for its high-end hotels and scenic viewpoints. However, the main attraction is the temple complex, particularly the Mahakal temple, which showcases religious harmony. To reach the Observatory Hill, there are two options: a longer motorable road on the northern side or a shorter but steeper path for pedestrians on the eastern side.

The temples: nearby places

1. Mahakal temple: This temple is of great significance as it is dedicated to Lord Mahakal, who is both a manifestation of Lord Shiva and Lord Buddha. Inside the temple, you will find the god Mahakal, three brass covered Lingam representing Brahma, Vishnu, and Maheshwar, as well as a statue of Lord Buddha. What’s interesting is that there are two groups of priests, one Hindu and the other Buddhist. It is customary for devotees to offer Puja to Lord Buddha before anything else.There are colourful flags all over the place, and the Buddhist Prayer Wheel.

In front of the temple, there is a statue of Mandi the Bull, the Vahana of Lord Shiva.

2. Ganesha temple: There is a small temple dedicated to Lord Ganesha just in front of the main temple.

6. Mahakal cave which is the abode of “Saat Kanya” (Seven Daughters – actually Sapta Matrika or Seven Mothers) and Mahakal Shiva.

The Kanchenjunga range is often referred to as “The Sleeping Buddha” because it resembles a giant man reclining in a supine position, stretching from Mount Kabru South to Mount Pandim.
