Kankaria Lake, situated in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India, is the city’s second largest lake. Found in the southeastern part of Ahmedabad, specifically in the Maninagar area, it was presented in 1451 during the reign of Sultan Qutb-ud-Din Ahmad Shah II, although its origins trace back to the Chaulukya era. The lake is encircled by a lakefront offering various attractions such as a zoo, toy train, kids’ city, tethered balloon ride, water rides, water park, food stalls, and recreational facilities. The lakefront underwent renovations in 2007-2008. Moreover, the Kankaria Festival, a week-long celebration, is held here in the last week of December, showcasing numerous cultural, artistic, and social events.

Kankaria Zoo, also known as Kamla Nehru Zoological Garden, was founded by Rueben David in 1951, covering 21 acres. It was acclaimed as the premier zoo in Asia in 1974. The zoo, which spans 31 acres, is a habitat for various mammals, birds, and reptiles. Tigers, lions, pythons, anacondas, snakes, elephants, and albino animals are among the exotic creatures residing there. In addition, visitors can observe rhesus monkeys, spotted deer, white blackbucks, chinkaras, emus, jungle babblers, bush-quails, and common palm civets.

Amusement Park

The amusement park features the Boomerang Roller Coaster, the Tossing Arm, the Torching Tower, Disk ‘O’ pendulum, and the merry-go-round. Additionally, there will be a children’s play area for video games. Unfortunately, on July 14, 2019, the pendulum arm of the Disk ‘O’ ride broke, causing the attached end to collide with the ride’s base and plummet 20 feet to the ground, resulting in the deaths of 2 individuals and injuring 29 others.

Kids City

This world is designed for kids and covers a 4240 sq. meter area with 18 activity centers including banks, fire station, science lab, radio station, police station, court room and prison, dental and medical hospital, theatre, BRTS, heritage gallery, town governance, IT center, News room, ice-cream factory, etc. AMC has obtained copyrights and patents for the individual games in the buildings, the single point system, Virmo (Virtual Money) and the enterprise of the diverse venues in games.

Toy Trains

The Atal Express, named in honor of Atal Bihari Vajpayee on his birthday in 2008, runs along a 4.5 km track at a leisurely speed of 10 km/h, accommodating up to 150 passengers. Manufactured by Severn Lamb, this train has been a hit, attracting nearly a million visitors in its first 11 months. Following its success, the Swarna Jayanti Express was also launched. Both trains, along with the railway, operate on a 2 ft (610 mm) narrow gauge.

Balloon Safari

Ahmedabad Eye offers a safe hot air balloon experience near Kankaria Lake following its recent renovation. The expansive balloon complex covers an area of 3000 square yards and is divided into four distinct sections – a restaurant, the tethered balloon, a heritage exhibit, and an exhibition showcasing the construction of the Ahmedabad Eye. SKYZ, a balloon-themed restaurant, can be found at the Ahmedabad Eye, which is managed by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation. Additionally, visitors can enjoy dining at the Rainforest Refrain restaurant on the premises.

Nagina Wadi

Nagina Wadi is a small island located in the middle of Kankaria Lake. It features a quaint summer palace that was first built for Mughal royalty. You can reach Nagina Wadi by walking along a straight path lined with trees that cuts through half of the lake. In 2009, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation and Amrapali Group added a musical fountain with rainbow laser lights that illuminate the area at night. There are also food stalls available for visitors. One of the main attractions is the mesmerizing water show that takes place here, making it a must-see experience.

Stone Mural Park

India is in the process of building the biggest Stone Mural Park, named Gujar Gaurav Gatha, along the side walls of a circular lake. Artists are presently depicting the history and development of Gujarat using pink sandstone. The murals span 3150 square feet, showcasing the history of Ahmedabad. Upon its completion, it will extend to 6000 feet in length, earning the title of the world’s largest mural at 30000 square meters.

The murals will showcase a variety of subjects, such as the folklore and history of Ahmedabad, the great rulers of Gujarat, ports, commerce, moral business-trade traditions, education, the freedom fight, cultural heritage, art and literature, cultural expression, modern Gujarat, global Gujaratis, and the stories of common Gujaratis from past centuries. Additionally, they will feature tales of ancient sage Dadhichi, Mahatma Gandhi, Sardar Patel, and Indulal Yagnik.

The embankment of One Tree Hill is home to the tombs of the Dutch and Armenian, highlighting the strong trading influence of the Dutch East India Company in the city in earlier times. These tombs are constructed in the Saracenic style, with domes and pillars as prominent features. The tombs date back to the years 1641 to 1699. It is speculated that the Armenian tombs may have belonged to brokers associated with the Dutch factory.
